About This Service

What is repiping and does my home need it?

Repiping means replacing the water supply lines in your home, either all of them or the failing sections, with new PEX or copper. Your home may need it if you have repeated leaks, low water pressure, rusty or discolored water, or pipe material with a poor track record such as galvanized steel, polybutylene, or Kitec. Many Phoenix-area homes built from the late 1970s through the 2000s used some of these materials.

Hard water also wears copper from the inside and can lead to pinhole leaks. Fast Layne Plumbing inspects the existing lines and explains whether a repair or a repipe makes more sense. The work normally requires a permit and a city inspection, and we test the new lines under pressure before the walls are closed. PEX and copper are both good options, and we explain the tradeoffs for your home so you can choose.

Our repiping services

01
Whole-Home Repiping

In homes with aging or damaged plumbing, we replace every water line with durable materials like PEX or copper as part of our whole-home repiping services. We work in clean sections to minimize disruption and test all lines before patching walls. This is the best long-term solution if you’re facing frequent leaks or pipe failures.

02
Partial Repiping

Not every home needs a full system replacement. If only certain areas are affected, like in a bathroom or kitchen, and a simple pipe repair is not enough, we perform targeted repiping that restores flow without overhauling the entire house. This service often pairs well with upgrades, like toilet installation during a remodel.

03
Outdated Pipe Material Replacement

Galvanized steel, polybutylene, cast-iron, and even Orangeburg pipes break down from rust, root intrusion, or chemical reactions. When that happens, you see rusty water, low pressure, and surprise leaks. Fast Layne Plumbing swaps those aging lines for modern copper or PEX so you enjoy clear water, steady flow, and fewer plumbing emergencies.

04
Post-Leak Repiping

Our water leak detection & repair services locate and replace weak and affected spots before they cause further damage, whether in pipes or slabs. This is ideal for preventing repeat issues in problem-prone areas.

Repiping vs pipe repair: Which One Does Your Home Need?

Factor Pipe Repair Repiping
Scope of Work Fixes a specific damaged section of the pipe. Replaces all or most of the home’s piping system.
Best For Isolated leaks or minor damage. Frequent leaks, corrosion, or outdated materials (e.g., galvanized pipes).
Cost Lower upfront cost. Higher upfront cost but more cost-effective long term.
Time to Complete Typically completed in a few hours. May take a few days, depending on the home size.
Disruption Level Minimal interruption. Moderate disruption, since walls or flooring may be opened.
Longevity Short- to medium-term fix. Long-term solution (can last 50+ years).
Water Quality Impact Little to no improvement. Improves water quality if old pipes are rusted or contaminated.
Recommended When You have a single leak or recent damage. You’re experiencing multiple leaks, low pressure, or water discoloration.

What causes pipes to fail in Phoenix homes?

  • Polybutylene. Used in many homes from the late 1970s to the mid 1990s. It can fail at fittings without warning.
  • Kitec. The orange and blue pipe sold from the mid 1990s to the 2000s. Its brass fittings are known to corrode and leak.
  • Galvanized steel. Found in older homes. It rusts inside, which restricts flow and discolors water.
  • Copper pinholes. Phoenix-area water is commonly 200 ppm or higher, per City of Phoenix water quality reports. Water chemistry and velocity can wear small holes in copper over time.
  • High water pressure and shifting soil. Both put extra stress on lines, especially those under the slab.

How is a home repiped, step by step?

  1. Inspect and plan. We check the existing pipe, pressure, and the route for new lines, and talk through PEX or copper.
  2. Permit. Repiping normally requires a permit, and we tell you what your city needs.
  3. Shut off and drain. We shut off the water and drain the system.
  4. Run new lines. We run new supply lines to each fixture, opening small access points in walls where needed.
  5. Connect fixtures and test. We pressure test the new lines before anything is closed up.
  6. Inspection and cleanup. The city inspects the work where required, and we clean up.

How long does a repipe take?

It depends on the size of the house and the number of fixtures. A whole-home repipe commonly takes a few days, and a partial repipe can be much shorter. We give you a plan for your home before we start.

When should I repipe instead of repairing?

A single leak with the rest of the pipe in good shape usually calls for a pipe repair. Repeated leaks, a known problem material, or pipe that is failing in several places points toward repiping. If you are not sure where a leak is, our leak detection team can find it before you decide. A pipe that is flooding your home is an emergency plumbing call.

We fix it right the first time, with upfront pricing before any work begins.
